Data Warehouse Training

There are many learning opportunities for users to take advantage of "anytime, anywhere" and we list them here.

Penn Data Warehouse Introduction for New Users -- This brief ( 30 minutes) online course in Workday Learning will help you answer the following 'big picture' questions about the Data Warehouse:

  • What is the Data Warehouse?
  • What does it contain?
  • How can I use it?
  • What user support services are available?

Relational Database System Concepts -- This 35-minute tutorial (not in Workday Learning!) will introduce you to basic concepts about relational database management systems, such as tables, primary keys, and indexed columns.

Data Collection Training Options

In addition to BusinessObjects training (instructor-led classes), recommended if you write or edit queries, you definitely need to familiarize yourself with the kind of data you plan to use. Occasional classroom workshops are offered in addition to the recommended and always-available online options below.

Workday Learning Courses (PennKey login required)

  • Using the Student Data Collection in the Data Warehouse (required for data access!)
  • Introduction to the General Ledger Data Collection and Using the FINQUERY Universe at Penn (optional)
  • Introduction to the PennERA Proposals Data Collection and Using the PennERA Proposals Universe (optional)

Query Tool Training Options

Self-service resources for using BusinessObjects are available at How-To Guides, Tips and Frequently-Asked Questions (FAQs)

Online Communities Available

It is important not to underestimate the learning opportunities presented by being an active participant in informal listservs and user groups. Studies show tht this type of learning is often the most effective and time-efficient!

Listservs

Upon receiving access to the Data Warehouse, all users are automatically subscribed to the ISC-WAREHOUSE. This electronic mail list announces the inclusion of new collections in the Warehouse, changes in warehouse availability, and other information of general interest.

Users of Data Warehouse collections are also automatically subscribed to collection-related listservs (such as FINQUERY-WH, STUDENT-WH) which announce changes to existing collections or inclusion of new elements, as well as changes in refresh cycles and collection availability. List members often discuss query methods and data questions via the lists as well.

If you are not receiving e-mail concerning general issues about the Warehouse or e-mail concerning a particular data collection, contact Enterprise Information & Analytics to be added to the distribution lists.
