The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is leading an initiative to help institutions of higher education reduce cybersecurity risks related to conducting research. Following several months of dialogue with the higher education cybersecurity community and a Request for Comments that closed in August 2023, NIST is actively seeking feedback on an Initial Public Draft of NIST Interagency Report (NISTIR) 8481, Research for Cybersecurity: Findings and Possible Paths Forward, which is available for public comment through October 31. The goal of this report is to highlight cybersecurity challenges and risks across the higher education research ecosystem and to identify potential paths forward for NIST to support efforts to enhance cybersecurity risk management practices across the higher education research community.
Connie LaSalle, Senior Technology Policy Advisor at NIST, is leading this initiative and will share more at tomorrow’s Penn Information Security Aware Community (PISAC) meeting, including how higher education researchers and cybersecurity practitioners can be more involved in NIST’s ongoing cybersecurity work.
