Many notebook users at Penn use either a port replicator or a hub display.
Port replicators
Port replicators have essentially replaced the mechanically-attached docks once in common use at the University. Almost all current port replicators use the USB-C connector. A typical port replicator will include USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, and Ethernet ports. Note that some manufacturers such as Dell and Lenovo use "dock" or "docking station" to describe USB-C attached port replicators.
University constituents should be cautioned that the USB-C connector is now quite aged (common availability was in 2016), and thus older port replicators will not perform to expectations.
Hub displays
Hub displays are a more recent innovation than port replicators, with the first capable modern versions hitting the market in 2019 and 2020. A typical hub display will include USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, and Ethernet ports.
